The use of faith and reason in the pursuit of truth has been analyzed and discussed by theologists and philosophers for many years. Reason is the principle(s) of a factual inquiry used to form a conclusion. Faith is the belief in something or someone without the use of the principle(s) of reason.
The apostle Paul argues that anyone can see the truth of God’s existence from simply using his or her reason to look at the world around themselves. Things were obviously better in the world during Paul’s lifetime, and this point of view made more since at that time. But he also points out that people do not come to know God through reason. People come to know God through faith and faith alone.
St. Thomas Aquinas claimed that the fact that we have faith in eternal salvation proves that faith is obviously a theological truth that is higher than any human reasoning possible. He also believed that one could gain some insight about religious truths through reason, but without faith these insights would be incomplete. Aquinas called this “a twofold truth” about religious claims, “one to which the inquiry of the reason can reach, the other which surpasses the whole ability of the human reason” (St. Thomas Aquinas, Contra Gentiles, Book One: God, Chapter 4). He was sure that a non-believer could find his or her way to truths that are governed by reason, but he or she could not even find much less understand the truths governed by faith without becoming a true believer in the divine. Aquinas held that the more a concept is understood, the more of its effects can be seen. Since God is the creator of all things it follows that the more that is understood about God the greater amount of knowledge of what He does or what he is capable of doing will be attained. However some objects of faith, like the Holy Trinity or ever-lasting life are entirely above the whelm of reason.
