Some researchers use the term mindset to describe the way people think about ability and talent. There are two different mindsets in a human being, Fixed Mindset, and Growth Mindset. Fixed mindset suggests that an individual’s abilities are innate and unchangeable. People with the fixed mindset see failure as permanent and they hate to receive feedback because they think those are the personal attack. Also, they are likely to give up when they face an obstacle. In contrast, people with the growth mindset believe that anything you can improve through practice, also they see failure as an opportunity to learn so they can have a chance to improve. They are more likely to try challenging tasks and work hard to improve, even try their best to solve the problem.
Therefore, according to the mindset video TED talk. In one study children were interviewed to find out if they had fixed or growth mindsets. They were given a simple puzzle to solve when they were finished, researchers asked them to try this puzzle again or the one that’s a little bit harder. Children have different responses with the different mindset, children with the fixed mindset would like to do the same one because they don’t want to make a mistake. But children with the growth mindset would like to try the new one.
Mindset influences everything in your daily life such as risk-taking, the perspective of feedback, finish difficult tasks and communication competence. Your mindset could help or impede your ability to interact with others effectively. If people with the fixed mindset, because they don’t like challenged by others and more likely to deny and defend their self-esteem. Their communication competence and intercultural communication are very low, so they are really hard to maintain a long-term and stable relationship with others because sometime they would respond emotionally. But people with the growth mindset are totally different. They are more likely to have the high ability of communication competence and intercultural communication because they are very welcome feedback and get curious about criticism by others. They are willing to learn something from failure and take action to changes immediately when they found the problem in order to improve their communication skill. Mostly, people with the growth mindset are open-mindedness and have the right motivation when they interact with other people. Therefore, if a person wants to have better communication competence and intercultural communication, you should work on your mind first.
