Self-Presentation and Social Perception
The passage from Mathew 7:3-5 is intended to counsel religious members against criticizing fellow members but should instead concentrate on bettering themselves first before condemning or discouraging other individuals (Gilovich, Chen, Keltner, & Nisbett, 2016). This verse shows that no one is perfect, all individuals have challenges that they may be undergoing, and so they should not focus on the negative aspect of other individuals but instead aim to make them better (Gilovich et al., 2016). Jesus’ intention was to show just as individuals may see other wrongs and weaknesses in other individuals, they too have their own wrongs and weaknesses that may still be noticed by other members (Gilovich et al., 2016).
Self-perception is how individuals see and express themselves according to their thoughts (Gilovich et al., 2016). This verse is meant to challenge individuals who might criticize other individual’s weaknesses where else they are not perfect either and have a plank of in their eyes (Gilovich et al., 2016). The topics on self-presentation and social perception relate to this verse as both refer to how different individuals present themselves to other members and how they perceive other individuals in the same environment (Gilovich et al., 2016). Self-presentation and social perception influences the self-esteem of individuals and it is important to encourage other members by showing care to them, which will enable them to improve their performance (Gilovich et al., 2016).
Self-presentation is a normal daily occurrence in the lives of individuals and has an impact in their lives (Gilovich et al., 2016). Every individual should carry his/her social responsibility and should concentrate on his/her personal improvement, which will enable other members to use them as good examples and improve their performance instead of criticizing and discouraging other members (Gilovich et al., 2016). The verse indicates that criticizing may have a negative impact on other members as it may cause arguments or dislikes ruining the relationships at job environments or between two partners, which may lead to failure in achieving the desired goals (Gilovich et al., 2016).
