Pope Francis went on a one day visit to Latvia and he was reminded of all the suffering the Latvians have dealt with in the past several years. Latvia is a country that is located in Northern Europe. It is one of many countries that makes up the Baltic Region. They were able to throw out the Soviet domination that was ruling their country and since this, they have seen an increase in better living. They have seen major developments in bringing in more tourism and a better, growing economy. Pope Francis made a statement saying “Virgin Mary invites ” us to ‘receive’ our brothers and sisters, to care for them, in a spirit of universal fraternity.” This inspired over a thousand people to attend Mass at Latvia’s Catholic Shrine. Pope Francis went to the monument that honors them on Monday and laid flowers as he prayed alongside people from all different faith backgrounds.
This trip that the Pope has taken, has absorbed a lot of attention that many were focusing on a current abuse scandal. This scandal has been around in the Roman Catholic Church for almost two decades. Pope Francis hopes to make a statement at worldwide meeting with all the bishops next year. This is said to be one of the largest diplomatic coups to date.
I believe this situation relates back to class because of our main focus being religions in the second wave civilizations. This goes to show that religions have changed from when they first originated. When we look back, there was definitely a deal of conflicts, war, struggles, and tragedies and it is shown through this article that those types of problems still occur today. The main objective we can inherit from this event, is that the importance is not what has happened in the past, but more so on what we do to take a step forward when unfortunate things happen.
