Most of us don’t think about the process the stuff we buy goes through. Everything we buy goes though Extraction, Production, Distribution, Consumption, and Disposal. Extraction is just another fancy word for “Trashing the Planet” The process of Extraction is basically just chopping down trees, and blow up mountains just to specific metals. We’re running out of natural resources more and more everyday and we’re not realizing how bad it can affect us. Our stuff also goes through Production which is an energy to make toxic chemicals and mixing it with our natural resources. Production produces up to 4 billion pounds of pollution a year. Another process is Distribution which is selling all these toxic products as fast as possible, externalizing the cost. By externalizing the costs of these products, that makes people want to buy more and more. Next, is Consumption which is the “Heart of the System.” Consumption has made us a nation of consumers. The average U.S. person now consumes twice as much as they did 50 years ago. Did you know that we only use up to 1% of the thins we buy after 6 months? This is because better things are coming out each and everyday. Last but not least theirs Disposal which is when we throw out/burn everything we don’t want/need anymore. You may think this is good but it really isn’t. All the chemicals that were made in the production stage all get burned in the Disposal stage and releases toxins in the air. These toxins that gets released into the air later on make a dangerous toxic called Dioxin. Dioxin is the most dangerous man made toxin. We could stop the number one source of the most toxic man-made substance known just by stopping burning the trash.
