What would Florence Nightingale’s sentiments be if she could obtain a visualization of nursing in today’s society? According to the documentary entitled “Nurses: If Florence Could See Us Now”, Florence Nightingale was considered the mother and founder of modern day nursing. Nursing is defined as the attributes, characteristic, and actions of a nurse providing care on behalf of, or in conjunction, with, a client. The profession of nursing is ever evolving because there is a distinct difference between the past and present. In this documentary critique I will be exploring what I learned about nursing from the documentary, the impact that the film had on my perception of the nursing profession, how I will utilize the information from the documentary in my nursing practice, and what I think Florence Nightingale would say if she could see how nursing has evolved today.

The entire documentary is a wise, educational, and knowledge based montage of nursing, but if I had to narrow it down to one piece of knowledge that I retained that would be the deep seeded history of the profession of nursing. In the midst of viewing the documentary, I learned that understanding the rich history of nursing is a great foundation for every individual to possess to obtain insight into the vast occupation of nursing. Overall, I learned that Florence Nightingale wore many hats as she performed many jobs and fulfilled the roles of being a nurse, statistician, writer, researcher, influential voice that inspired worldwide change, saved lives, and laid the foundation for nursing transformation and evolution into the trusted profession it is today. She was very influential because she was responsible for developing nursing education, practice, and administration. In order to understand nursing in today’s society, meanwhile preparing for the future individuals must comprehend past events and associating factors that accompanied it.

The documentary had a positive impact on my perception of the nursing profession. This is because the film provided the viewers with an honest glimpse into the complex, exciting, and even challenging facets of the nursing profession through personal interviews from over 100 nurses worldwide.
