Diversity in healthcare involves the different values and differences, which are based on different aspects, which include race, religion, and ethnicity which impact the delivery of healthcare (Dreachslin, Gilbert, & Malone, 2013). This makes it important for healthcare practitioners to understand diversity in healthcare, which will help them in providing effective healthcare to all patients regardless of their diverse backgrounds (Dreachslin, Gilbert, & Malone, 2013). Diversity may also impact the healthcare workforce of an organization if it is composed of members from different backgrounds which may cause a conflict if the right measures are not implemented (Dreachslin, Gilbert, & Malone, 2013). Cultural competency will help healthcare practitioners to relate well with other workers and patients, which is important in bringing equality in the working environment. This is also important in providing all members with equal opportunities, which is effective in enabling an organization to achieve its goals and objectives (Dreachslin, Gilbert, & Malone, 2013).

Diversity means that different individuals are different in certain aspects, which may include ethnicity, cultural backgrounds, religion, and race. These factors contribute to the different needs of the individuals as well as shape their perspectives on different healthcare matters (Dreachslin, Gilbert, & Malone, 2013). It is important to understand this aspect since healthcare delivery involves the provision of healthcare services to all individuals regardless of their differences. It is important for healthcare practitioners to understand this important aspect as this may influence their performance of their different roles in the healthcare sector (Dreachslin, Gilbert, & Malone, 2013). Diversity may also affect the healthcare workforce as different members from different backgrounds compose the healthcare workforce. There are diverse demographics, which influence the healthcare industry, which includes culture, gender, religion and spirituality, and social and economic status (Martin et al., 2016)
Culture, which involves common customs and values which are shared by a certain group influences healthcare in different ways. One of the ways includes its influence on different perceptions of health care approaches to health promotion, which are shaped by the beliefs of different individuals (Martin et al., 2016). Gender affects the equal distribution of healthcare services between men and women. There are inequalities in healthcare based on gender due to the different biological aspects and influence from society with different views on the male and female gender (Martin et al., 2016). Religion and spirituality also impact the view on different healthcare approaches. Religion and spirituality have a big role in the delivery of healthcare as this may impact the decision-making process of patients which will determine the implementation of certain healthcare strategies (Martin et al., 2016).
Diverse social and economic status influence the healthcare industry due to the different perceptions related to different socioeconomic levels (Martin et al., 2016). A low socioeconomic status is associated to low educational status as well as poor health where else a high socioeconomic status is associated with employment and high-income level which leads to the improved health status of individuals (Martin et al., 2016). Social and economic status affects the quality of life for different individuals. This has an impact on the equal distribution of health care services with big gaps between individuals in the high social and economic status and individuals in the low social and economic status (Martin et al., 2016).
Cultural Competence and the Role It Plays In Organizational Behavior
Cultural competence is the ability for health care providers and organizations to understand the different cultural diversity and implement measures to address these differences to provide effective healthcare to all individuals regardless of their differences (Purnell, 2014). Cultural competence is important due to the increase in diversity, which has been attributed to the globalization, which has resulted in organizations dealing with individuals from diverse backgrounds (Purnell, 2014). Diversity poses opportunities as well as challenges to healthcare organizations, which makes it necessary for healthcare providers to understand diversity to enable them to address the challenges as well as take advantage of the opportunities brought about by diversity (Purnell, 2014).
Cultural competence is important in shaping organizational behavior by bringing transformation in the organization by influencing individuals’ thinking processes and attitudes (Purnell, 2014). Cultural competence also helps policymakers in making effective policies and strategies, which are meant to create a good and supportive environment for different cultural backgrounds (Purnell, 2014). Cultural competence is important in shaping organizational behavior by encouraging positive change, which is meant to prevent any conflicts, which may arise due to diversity issues in an organization (Purnell, 2014). Cultural competence also helps healthcare leaders in developing their teams by reinforcing their organizational culture, which can be achieved, by the leaders being good examples in their actions, which will impact the rest of the members of the organization (Purnell, 2014).
Diversity Management and How Have Changes in U.S. Demographics Impacted the Healthcare Industry, Diversity of Customers, and Diversity within the Organization Itself
Diversity management is the process of using effective strategies in an organization to create a suitable environment to accommodate the diverse individuals and groups in the organization (Rose, 2013). This can be achieved by creating an inclusive working environment, which is able to accommodate the different diverse backgrounds in the organization. This is important as it has an impact on the organization in achieving its goals and objectives by creating an effective workforce (Rose, 2013). There are different programs, which can be used in diversity management to create a favorable environment, which supports all diverse groups in the organization (Rose, 2013). Changes in U.S. demographics have impacted the healthcare industry in different aspects which include an increase in healthcare resources required in the delivery of healthcare services. Due to the changes in population size and race, different healthcare resources are needed which has led to an increase in healthcare costs (Rose, 2013).
This may also be contributed by addressing the different and diverse conditions, which surround different groups. Changes in U.S. demographics have impacted the diversity of customers due to the changing patient’s needs which require healthcare providers to change in addressing the changing needs (Rose, 2018). Some of the changes include an increase in the aging population, which has increased healthcare demand due to the health issues associated with this group (Rose, 2018). Changes in U.S. demographics have impacted diversity within organizations by increasing the number of employees from diverse backgrounds which have impacted the organizational cultures (Rose, 2018). Organizations are always developing new strategies to address the increasing diversity in the organizations, which is important in optimizing the benefits associated with a diverse workforce. Due to the increase in customer diversity, organizations should focus on changing their organizational structure to support and address the changing customers’ needs (Rose, 2018).

Understanding diversity supports awareness by enabling individuals and organizations to embrace and accommodate individuals from different cultural backgrounds. The issue of diversity cannot be ignored since it is an aspect, which has continued to increase, and it is important for organizations aiming at global levels to understand diversity (Dreachslin, Gilbert, ; Malone, 2013). This is important in creating awareness of the different cultural backgrounds in the organization. This will help the organization to prepare adequately and accommodate the diverse backgrounds. This will also lead to respect and tolerance of different cultural backgrounds, which is important in creating an inclusive organizational culture. (Dreachslin, Gilbert, ; Malone, 2013). Understanding diversity supports empathy by enabling individuals as well as organizations to understand other individual’s feelings, which is important in helping individuals, or organizations to see things from their perspective (Dreachslin, Gilbert, & Malone, 2013).
This helps individuals in understanding the reasons behind why different individuals behave in a certain manner, which is important in implementing effective measures to accommodate the individuals (Dreachslin, Gilbert, & Malone, 2013). Understanding diversity supports understanding with a community by helping individuals to understand the values and different perspectives of different cultures. This is important in enabling organizations to establish effective relationships, which enables the two parties to create a common culture and share the same experiences (Dreachslin, Gilbert, & Malone, 2013). Understanding diversity supports a national and global community by helping individuals to appreciate the unique aspects of different cultures. This encourages communication and the formation of relationships, which addresses the challenges and conflicts, which may arise due to different perspectives (Dreachslin, Gilbert, & Malone, 2013). Understanding diversity also enables individuals to embrace different cultural backgrounds, which has been attributed to bringing peace between individuals from different backgrounds (Dreachslin, Gilbert, & Malone, 2013).
