Abstract
This research is aimed at finding out the effects of differentiated instruction on the academic performance of a set of mixed ability grade ten Principles of Business students in a High School in St. Elizabeth. The research question answered in this research are: “How effective is differentiated instruction on grade ten students’ academic performance,” and “What are the students’ reactions towards the use of differentiated instruction in the classroom?” The research will utilize a research design in the form of an action research. The sampling technique that will be utilized in this research is convenience sampling. The group that was used for this research consists of five boys and ten girls, five were visual learners, six as auditory and four as kinesthetic. The process took place over an eight (8) week period. The data collection instruments that were used to complete this research include: for quantitative data a pre-test and post test and for the collection of qualitative data pre-observation and post observation, attitude scale/questionnaire and learning style questionnaire. Recommendations were derived from the study and were made to various groups and stakeholders to whom the approach would be relevant. Teachers should utilize the method of Differentiated Instruction to cater for the needs of the learners in the classroom. The Ministry of Education should have workshops and seminars that educate teachers and re-emphasize the importance of the approach. Finally, the principal can lobby on behalf of the school to receive the necessary equipment and materials that are needing to facilitate the effective use of the intervention.
